Mastery-based grading in Higher Education: Improving student learning, increasing student motivation, and recapturing the joy of teaching

Speakers

Details

We will give an introduction to the philosophy behind mastery grading and share our experiences with this mode of grading across a number of STEM courses (Calculus and Linear Algebra) as well as its use in a large scale introductory General Education Statistics Course, where we are using mastery grading at scale. We have experimented with a number of different implementations and will share what we have learned in the process, in particular how to use this system in a set of coordinated courses with a group of instructors. We hope that you can take something useful for your own classes from this talk.
