Practicing basic computational skills and developing conceptual understand are two of the many things that happen in the math classroom. Using videos and online homework to 'flip the classroom' is a beginning, but more can be done to promote higher order thinking skills. The University of Minnesota is in its sixth year of a redesign of its Pre-Calculus curriculum that 'flips the formula'. Instead of the professor beginning with the generalization and passing the formula to students who solve specific cases, students now begin with specific cases and develop algorithms for general solutions
