The supply of math instructors has not kept up with the demand for seats in first-year math courses. In this talk, I describe a transformation in a very large (around 4000 students) first-year calculus sequence at the University of British Columbia, from the point of view of scale. What can we learn in a studio, and what can we learn in a stadium? I'll present the project, and then discuss where it has succeeded, and where it still has a long way to go.
