The AIM Open Textbook Initiative

Details

The AIM Open Textbook Initiative began in 2010 as part of the larger UTMOST project (Undergraduate Teaching in Mathematics with Open Software and Textbooks) with a focus on two issues: (1) to make faculty aware of and encourage the use of open access textbooks for traditional undergraduate mathematics courses, and (2) to substantially reduce the time and effort to find and evaluate textbooks. Since then the Editorial Board has identified textbooks that can be recommended for course adoption in almost all the commonly taught courses in college math departments. In this seminar I will compare the AIM initiative to other OER efforts and elaborate on the successes and challenges over the years. I will also describe the efforts by the larger UTMOST project to make it easier to produce textbooks in multiple formats (PDF, print, HTML, EPUB,…) easier and with higher quality than the books from commercial publishers.
