We will describe efforts at Oregon State University to help students master the use of partial derivatives in physical and geometric contexts, in both mathematics and physics courses. Successfully navigating the language differences between disciplines requires a rich concept image of partial derivatives. Several examples will be presented, along with some of the methods and tools developed to address them, as well as some of the underlying education research.
